Reading & Writing Workshop
Our Reading and Writing Workshop curriculum is guided by Teachers College Reading & Writing Project (Columbia University). This year students will be writing realistic fiction, personal & persuasive essays, literary essays, nonfiction writing about science and history and poetry.
We'll also be writing about reading in our reading notebooks, using this:
On the first day of school I told the students that this year our classroom library would not be organized by reading level. Instead it would be organized by genre (realistic fiction, science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, poetry, nonfiction, graphic novel, biography/autobiography/memoir and traditional literature). They cheered.
We have Reading Notebooks. We chart the books we've read on a genre chart, we have a reading list, a books-to-read section and a "book thoughts" section. We watch book trailers. We have wait lists for hot books. We keep our books out on our desks and read whenever we get the chance. We are wild readers.
It is not a competition. There will be no extrinsic reward. At the end of the year if a student reads 12 books we will celebrate. If a student reads 67 books we will celebrate. We read because reading enriches us, captivates us, informs us, delights us.
Our Read Alouds
We study multi-syllabic word decoding, prefixes & suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, spelling and other language components.
